Echoes of 2003 Iraq Invasion as US-Iran Tensions Escalate

Footage released by the Pentagon allegedly showing Iranian vessels involved with Thursday's attack on two oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

WASHINGTON- US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo claims “Iran is responsible for the attacks” on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman yesterday. Pompeo’s remarks were followed by video footage released by the Pentagon that allegedly shows an Iranian vessel approaching the tanks and removing an unexploded mine, prompting a comparison to the lead-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The release of the footage comes hours after Iran dismissed accusations by US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s that “Iran is responsible for the attacks.” Pompeo told a press conference that “taken as a whole, these unprovoked attacks present a clear threat to international peace and security” referring to four similar attacks that took place a month ago off the coast of the UAE.

Pompeo’s words and the release of footage by the Pentagon has been compared to former Secretary of State Collin Powell’s infamous 2003 address to the U.N. in the lead-up to the US-led invasion of Iraq on dubious evidence of weapons of mass destruction.

Tension between the USA and Iran has been steadily escalating since US President Donald Trump took office and abandoned the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran in 2018.
