VIENNA - UN Secretary General António Guterres told the R20 summit in Vienna that the world needed to “tax pollution not people” and that it needed to “end subsidies for fossil fuels” in order to create a truly “green economy.” The summit brought together actor and former Governor of California Arnold Schwarzenegger, climate activist Greta Thunberg alongside UN Secretary-General António Guterres and a group of world leaders, business, regional representatives, celebrities and politicians.

“What we are doing is to use taxpayers’ money, which means our money, to boost hurricanes, to spread drought, to melt glaciers, to bleach corals, in one word: to destroy the world. I believe that as taxpayers we would prefer to see our money back than to see our money used to destroy the world,“ Guterres told the summit.

Greta Thunberg called on politicians, celebrities, CEOs and Journalists to take responsibility, she said “people listen to you, and are influenced by you. You have an enormous responsibility, a responsibility that most of you have failed to take.”
