The USA - Trump to Biden: The End of an Uprising Against Democracy
Washington - Joseph R. Biden is officially the President of the United States now, and former Cinema for Peace chairwoman Kamala Harris serves as the first female and the first person of color to serve as the Vice President of the United States. Harris, being the highest-ranking woman in US history, will also be set to vote for many tie-breaking pieces of legislature, with the senate majority split 50-50 between the two parties. With control over the congress and senate, there is a lot that the new administration can accomplish, and the activities on their very first day testified the willingness to do so.
President Biden signed 17 executive orders on the first day, that reversed most of his predecessor's signature policies and put America back into the global politics. "We will lead, not merely by the example of our power, but by the power of our example", Biden said. The orders predominantly focused on the four major issues with the past administration: The handling of the current pandemic, the climate change crisis, Immigration, and racial Equity.
Pandemic: the new administration swiftly rejoined the World Health Organisation. They created a new role called the "COVID 19 response coordinator" as well as the directorate for global health security and biodefence at the National Security Council, a group his predecessor had disbanded. They mandated wearing masks on federal premises as well as started a "100-day mask challenge" encouraging the public to wear masks. The administration is also extending the pause (and moving for an eventual $50,000 per person cancellation) on federal student loan repayment, owing to the financial struggles during the pandemic.
Climate: The United States is back into the Paris Climate Agreement, and will officially rejoin within 30 days. The new administration also reverses many of the Trump administration's environmental policies including the permission for keystone XL Pipeline and reinstates several climate change regulations that were taken out by the Trump administration for industries as well as vehicle emission.
Immigration: The new administration immediately reversed the last administration's controversial, yet signature moves on immigration that rallied their supporters together, specifically, the Muslim Ban and the border wall. Furthermore, they included non-citizens in the census count, strengthened support for immigrants brought to the US as children, as well as ordered an immediate termination of the national emergency declaration that allowed the Trump administration to divert billions of dollars to the border wall.
Equality: The executive orders promoted diversity and inclusion training in federal agencies, contractors, and institutions. It also ordered federal agencies to review and report on equity in their ranks within 200 days and a plan on how to remove barriers to opportunities in policies and programs. They also reinforced title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to require that the federal government does not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.
