Who is The Goat?
MOSCOW - While France won the world cup, many would have instead expected Football players, Cristiano Ronaldo or Lionel Messi to be champions. The competition between Messi and Ronaldo on who is the Greatest Of All Time (GOAT) ended with both of them dropping out of the tournament early. With this in mind, the greatest of all time remains Muhammad Ali. Cinema for Peace hosted Ali's global farewell event at the London 2012 Olympic games. Ali thought that he succeeded because of his six values: confidence, conviction, dedication, giving, respect and spirituality. These are values that we could all do well to embody.
Two weeks ago Cinema For Peace wrote a story about the opportunities of the World Cup for Russia. One of these was illustrated by Amnesty International and their protest outside of the Russian embassy in Berlin. Amnesty called for the Ukrainian film director Oleg Sentsov’s “immediate release” from prison. Sentsov was given a 20-year prison sentence by a Russian court. Many fear for Sentsov's life, as he has been on hunger strike for 63 days. However, there is still hope that the goodwill of the World Cup will help Russia to progress its human rights.
Tragedy in London
LONDON - The recent tragic death of Ella Kissi-Debrah makes Al Gore's An Inconvenient Sequel especially important. Al Gore's orginal documentary An Inconenient Truth made the percentage of Americans attributing global warming to human activity rise from 41% to 50%.
Ella, who was a 9-year-old girl from London, died suddenly from an asthma attack in 2013. Just this week, a report claimed that there was a "striking association" between Ella's trips to the hospital and recorded spikes in air pollution in London. If proved correct, Ella’s would be the first death linked to climate change in the UK.
