Ai Weiwei and Puigdemont Meet

BERLIN — On the 21st of April 2018 the former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont and artist Ai Weiwei were brought together by Cinema for Peace for a discussion on the topic of political imprisonment in Ai Weiwei’s studio workshop.

Both Puigdemont and Ai Weiwei have experiences in this field, as Puigdemont was released on bail from Neumünster prison where he was charged with criminal proceedings.  Puigdemont led Catalonia's controversial independence referendum and Ai Weiwei served 81 days in arbitrary detention in China.

On the topic of political imprisonment Ai Weiwei once famously said that “I often ask myself if I am afraid of being detained again. I love freedom as much as anybody else, maybe more than most but it is a tragedy to live your life in fear.”
